Information about Canucks for Kids Fund

The Canucks for Kids Fund dedicates resources to assist charities who support children’s health and wellness, foster the development of grassroots hockey, and facilitate and encourage education in British Columbia.

Through a variety of programs in which Canucks players and employees participate, the team joins with Canucks fans and partner sponsors to raise funds.

The Canucks for Kids Fund raises awareness and funds through several charitable initiatives including: Canucks for Kids Fund 50/50, Dice & Ice Benefit presented by HSBC, Canucks Superskills presented by McDonald’s and the Canucks for Kids Fund Telethon presented by Chevrolet. The Canucks for Kids Fund also partners with the following key community charity events: YVR Golf for Kids, Wood Gundy at Park Place Charity Invitational, Special Olympics BC’s Sports Celebrities Festival, Raise A Reader and Spirit Bears in the City.

The Canucks for Kids Fund donated $2 million to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice from funds raised during the 2006-2007 season. For over 12 years Canuck Place has provided child-focused and family-centred care for children with life-threatening illnesses. The Hospice provides 24-hour, 7-days-a-week care by nurses and physicians in addition to family care, end-of-life, pain and symptom management, school music and play therapy, recreation opportunities and counseling services. Since 1993, the Vancouver Canucks have supported Canuck Place with over $18 million in funding.

In addition to grants the Canucks for Kids Fund also supports key initiatives in the BC community. At the Canucks Family Education Centre located at Britannia Community Centre in East Vancouver, low-income children and families are assisted through four literacy initiatives. At the Canucks Centre for BC Hockey, players, coaches and administrators from around BC gain skills, growth and development through initiatives and programs delivered through the Centre. Fin’s Friends, a character education curriculum for primary students that is free to schools, integrates literacy and social skills at critical learning phases in over 300 classrooms across the province.

Canucks for Kids Fund President Paolo Aquilini announced the hockey club’s charity will donate over $2.6 million to BC charities this season.

“The Canucks for Kids Fund and Orca Bay are very proud of our commitment to the community,” said Aquilini. “We are very grateful to our fans, our sponsor partners, Canucks players and their families, and the employees at Orca Bay who so generously donate funds and time to ensure children in BC have a healthy future.”

Proposal

The business environment continues to change and today an integral part of a company’s success relies on their investment in e-commerce. Investments in e-commerce offer a way to cut costs and expand markets. A passion of mine is sports. Therefore my individual project will deal with the sale and exchange of tickets to sporting events and concerts in Vancouver, B.C.

My family’s business was able to get season tickets for the Vancouver Canucks this year. But with everyone’s busy schedule, it is hard to attend every game. As a result, we either end up giving away the tickets or sell them. We normally sell the tickets on craigslist because of its popularity and its reach to the market. But with its popularity, it means more people selling tickets. Users often post their tickets several times a day, as a result the item you just posted is now on the third page and not as many people are looking at it. The market size of Canuck fans is tremendous and still continues to grow. The Vancouver Canucks have had 198 consecutive sell-outs at General Motors which solidifies the size of their fan base. The tickets are valued at $200 for the pair per game. The tickets on my website will be slightly marked up by $15-20 a ticket. However, this additional money will be donated to the Canuck for Kids Fund. I feel because of this more people are likely to buy from my website than craigslist and ebay, where people mark up their tickets by a lot more to make personal gains. Another inconvenience we faced while using craigslist was the hassle of meeting up with people. Purchasers from the website will be required pay to using pay pal or can pick up tickets at our coffee shop in Burnaby. My mom and sister often did not feel comfortable nor safe meeting up with random people from craigslist. By using pay pal has a payment method, it will eliminate this problem. If we sell tickets to 15 games, we will make back $3000. And if the tickets are marked up $15 each, a total of $450 will be donated to Canucks for Kids Fund. In addition to Vancouver Canuck games, my website will sell tickets to concerts and other sporting events. One of the perks of having season tickets is that you are given presale offers to concerts and other sport events. If I feel that the concert will be a sell-out and if there’s money to be made on reselling the tickets, I will go ahead and purchase the tickets and post them on my website. This is where I hope to make some revenue for myself. My business will use the Virtual Merchant Model and a Community Model.

Through the use of my website, I will be able to cut costs. I will no longer have to drive out to downtown and waste gas to meet customers. I will also be able to expand markets; I will use word of mouth and facebook to advertise my website. When I was younger, I wasn’t able to afford to go to hockey games, with my website I hope to cater to the needs of those individuals who are passionate about hockey but cannot afford scalpers ridiculous prices. Everyone should be able to experience and enjoy the Canucks play live.
